Our research deals with many aspects of healthy, sustainable productivity of food animals arranged in three Themes: Welfare Physiology, Product Quality and Resource Efficiency. We focus on basic research, often using model animals including mice and guinea pigs as well as farm animals. We have a special interest in lactation, including internationally recognized expertise in mammary gland development and function, but we are also starting to study muscle development and meat. We have a strong and collaborative European presence (we lead the COST Action in dairy animal welfare, DairyCare), but at the same time much of our research is conducted as MSc projects. Our research is targeted towards the achievement of global food security, and you can read about our philosophy for animal derived foods at the Brave New Food link below.
